Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay System This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in implementing replay systems.

Video review technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the ability to challenge specific decisions made by the chair umpire, mirroring the practice currently in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development comes just a season following the All England Club rolled out ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine specific situations, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Potential interference end of a rally.

Notably, there is no limit on the number of challenges a player can request.

Practical Application

A recent example occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire watched a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another change at The Championships this year involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves situations where fans have sometimes been unsure if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
