Tetris Wouldn't Win at The Game Awards — A New Category Could Fix That

Whenever a major honors show nears, there’s always an outcry for introducing fresh award types to honor underappreciated efforts and satisfy the spirits of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer previously argued for a horror game category. It would be amazing. The same goes for strategy board titles, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward since similar to single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal is the most urgent above others. This is the request: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and it will always spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise in the world of gaming, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards presently include genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these classifications successfully include many game types, and you can find room for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Think about these recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: building puzzles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Which classification works within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games published annually without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked in any category in 2014
  • Another creative title missed out that year
  • Popular arranging title got ignored that year
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers managed to sneak into niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often small games, yet the craft behind logic titles is of massive significance. Well-known matching games stand as most engaged experiences globally maintaining this status for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals famous sandbox experiences competing to become best-selling game of all time; it also contends as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. It would be easy to populate five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these are games that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers operate at the challenging frontier game development, producing among most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Just like movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait generations.
